Description: The M.A. Philosophy Programme aims at developing the ability to think critically, logically and analytically and to use philosophical reasoning in practical situations. Pursuing a degree in philosophy will help make students pursue interesting careers in media, education, law, politics, government etc. The M. A. Philosophy programme covers the full range of philosophical domains, from classical Indian Philosophy and Greek Philosophy to Modern Logic, Ethical theories of Mill and Kant and contemporary reflections on current debates in applied ethics and bio-ethics, analytic philosophy and continental philosophy, Kashmir Shaivism, Indian Logic, Indian Aesthetics, philosophy of science and law, and core courses in Indian and western philosophy texts. Current issues in feminist theory are also dealt with. There are many choices students have regarding which options they can choose which makes the Honours syllabus a rich and diverse experience for students. The students are trained to develop their own methodologies in understanding philosophical problems in general and research problems in particular. The department has introduced courses that reflect the immediate social reality such as on issues of gender, caste, culture and environment (Especially courses such as Feminism, Eco philosophy, Environmental ethics and Critical Philosophical Traditions of India, Philosophy of B. R. Ambedkar, Philosophy and Films, Philosophy of literature, Media ethics, philosophy of technology). The students would not just be able to identify the social problem but also be motivated to reflect on social experiences from their own unique philosophical perspective. This plays a crucial role in self-learning and knowledge production.
M.A. in Philosophy Programme Details: Programme Structure: The M.A. Philosophy programme is a two-year course divided into four-semester. Students are required to complete 80 credits for the completion of the course and for the award of the degree.
Grading System- Choice-Based Credit System
The CBCS proves an opportunity for the students to choose courses from the prescribed courses comprising core, elective/minor or skill-based courses. The courses can be evaluated following the grading system, which is considered to be better than the conventional marks system. The grading system provides uniformity in the evaluation and computation of the cumulative grade point average (CGPA) based on student’s performance in examinations and enables the students to move across institutions of higher learning. The uniformity in the evaluation system also enables potential employers in assessing the performance of the candidates.
